A cryptocurrency future is a contract to buy or sell a crypto asset at a set price on a set date. You don't take delivery of the underlying — you settle the difference in cash. Most retail crypto futures are "perpetual" contracts with no expiry date, where the price is kept close to the spot price through a funding rate that longs pay shorts (or vice versa) every 8 hours.
Almost every major broker that offers crypto offers some form of futures: regulated brokers (in the EU, US, and Australia) offer CME or CFTC-regulated futures with strict leverage caps. Offshore crypto exchanges offer perpetual futures with leverage up to 100x or higher. The user experience is similar; the regulatory protection is not.

How a crypto future works
Picture Bitcoin at $60,000. You open a futures position:
- Direction: long (you profit if Bitcoin rises) or short (you profit if it falls)
- Size: 1 contract, typically 0.01-1 BTC
- Leverage: 1x to 20x, depending on the broker and your jurisdiction
- Margin: the deposit required to hold the position, calculated as contract value ÷ leverage
If you go long with 5x leverage and Bitcoin rises 10% to $66,000, you make 50% on your margin (less fees). If Bitcoin falls 10% to $54,000, you lose 50% of your margin. If it falls 20% to $48,000, your margin is wiped and the position is liquidated.
The math is the same as leveraged spot trading, but the contract structure means you never actually own the Bitcoin. The broker nets out your position against the index price at the end of each day (or you close it manually).
What's different from crypto spot
Three structural differences that matter:
- Leverage is built in. Spot crypto trading on most regulated brokers caps leverage at 1:2 or doesn't allow it. Futures typically allow 1:5 to 1:20 for retail, sometimes higher in less-regulated jurisdictions.
- You can short as easily as long. Spot requires borrowing the asset to short. Futures contracts are inherently shortable — you just pick the direction.
- Funding rates apply (for perpetuals). Every 8 hours, longs and shorts exchange a small payment based on the difference between the contract price and the spot price. When the contract trades at a premium to spot (the common case in bull markets), longs pay shorts a small fee.
The funding rate is a hidden cost. On a $100,000 position with 0.01% funding every 8 hours, that's $10/day, or $3,650/year. For long-term holders, that's a real drag on returns.

For European retail traders, ESMA caps crypto CFD leverage at 1:2 since 2023. That makes crypto futures effectively a 2x product, which limits the upside and the downside.
For Australian retail, ASIC caps it at 1:2 for the same reason.
For US retail, futures are subject to CFTC rules that vary by exchange but typically allow up to 1:20 on Bitcoin futures for non-eligible traders.
The honest risk picture
Three risks that aren't obvious from the marketing:
Liquidation cascades
A 10x leveraged long position is liquidated if the underlying moves 10% against you. In a volatile market, a $1,000 position can be wiped in minutes. The 24/7 nature of crypto means this can happen on a Saturday night when no one is watching.
Funding rate drag
Perpetual futures bleed money on the side that the market is leaning toward. In a bull market, the funding rate is positive (longs pay shorts). If you're holding a long position, you're paying a daily fee to the short side. Over a year, this can be 5-15% of the position value.
Counterparty risk
Regulated futures have a clearing house (CME, Bakkt) that guarantees the trade. Offshore exchanges don't — your counterparty is the exchange itself, with no client fund segregation.
When futures make sense vs spot
- Day trading or short-term directional bets. Futures are cheaper to enter and exit than spot (no FX conversion, tighter spreads, smaller per-contract position size).
- Hedging an existing spot position. If you hold 1 BTC in cold storage and want to hedge against a short-term drop, shorting a futures contract is a clean way to do it.
- Shorting without borrowing. Spot shorting requires borrowing the asset, which is hard in crypto. Futures don't.
Spot is the right choice for:
- Long-term holding (no funding rate drag, no liquidation risk)
- Smaller accounts (futures margin requirements can be high)
- Anyone who wants actual ownership of the asset
The practical setup
If you decide futures are right for your use case:
- Use a regulated broker. CME futures via Interactive Brokers or a similar tier-1 broker. Avoid offshore exchanges for anything more than a small test trade.
- Start with low leverage. 1:2 or 1:3 maximum, even if the platform allows 1:20. The brokers that allow high leverage are betting that most traders will get liquidated; you don't want to be on that side of the bet.
- Set stop-losses manually. The auto-liquidation happens at the exchange level; a personal stop-loss lets you exit before the liquidation cascade.
- Track funding costs. If you're holding a position for more than a few days, the funding rate is a real cost. Add it to your return calculation.
- Don't over-allocate. Crypto futures should be 5-10% of a diversified portfolio at most, not the whole thing.
FAQ
What's the difference between futures and CFDs?
A futures contract is traded on an exchange (like CME) with a clearing house guaranteeing the trade. A CFD is an over-the-counter contract with the broker as counterparty. Functionally, they're similar. Regulatory protection differs: futures exchanges are heavily regulated; CFD brokers are regulated in their jurisdiction but not by an exchange.
Can you lose more than you invest in crypto futures?
With isolated margin (the default on most platforms), no — your loss is capped at your margin. With cross margin (where the broker uses your entire account to back the position), yes — a losing position can drain your other holdings. Most platforms default to isolated margin for new traders; don't change that.
What is the funding rate on a perpetual future?
A small fee (typically 0.01-0.05% per 8-hour period) paid between longs and shorts to keep the contract price close to spot. When the market is bullish, longs pay shorts. When bearish, shorts pay longs. The fee is charged regardless of profitability.
Are crypto futures taxed differently than spot?
Depends on the jurisdiction. In most countries, futures are taxed as derivatives, often with different rules than spot, sometimes more favourably for short-term traders. Check your local tax authority's guidance.
