Opening a brokerage account takes about 10 minutes online. This guide walks through the application, what documents you need, and what to expect after you submit.
Step 1: Choose your broker
If you have not picked a broker yet, start with the best brokers for beginners or the best stock brokers comparison. The application process is similar at every major US broker.
Step 2: Gather your documents
You need:
- Government-issued photo ID. A passport or driver's licence is standard.
- Social Security Number (SSN). Required for US tax reporting. Non-US residents use an ITIN or their home country's TIN.
- Employment information. Your employer's name and address.
- Bank account information. The routing number and account number for funding your brokerage account.
- Financial information. Your annual income, net worth, and investing experience. This determines your options trading approval level and margin eligibility.
Step 3: Complete the online application
Go to your chosen broker's website and click "Open an Account." The application asks:
- Personal information. Name, address, date of birth, SSN.
- Employment. Employer name, address, occupation.
- Financial profile. Annual income, net worth range, source of funds.
- Investing experience. Years of experience, types of investments you have traded, risk tolerance.
- Account type. Individual, joint, IRA, etc. See the account types guide.
- Account features. Margin trading? Options trading? You can say no to these initially and add them later.
Step 4: Accept the agreements
You will be asked to accept:
- Customer Agreement. The terms of your brokerage relationship.
- Margin Agreement. Only if applying for margin.
- Options Agreement. Only if applying for options trading.
- Electronic delivery consent. For trade confirmations and tax documents.
Read these. They are long, but the key sections cover fees, dispute resolution (arbitration), and how the broker can restrict your account.
Step 5: Verify your identity
The broker verifies your identity electronically. If the automated check fails, you may need to upload a photo of your ID and a selfie, or mail a notarised copy.
Step 6: Fund your account
Most brokers offer several funding methods:
- ACH transfer from your bank. Free. Takes 1-3 business days for the first transfer, then typically 1 day.
- Wire transfer. Same day. May cost $15-$30. Faster for large amounts.
- Mobile cheque deposit. Use the broker's app to photograph a cheque.
- ACAT transfer from another broker. Moves your entire account. Takes 5-10 business days.
Start with a small amount to test the process. Add more once the first transfer clears.
What happens after you open the account
Instant access. Most brokers let you see the platform immediately, even before your first deposit clears.
Paper trading. If the broker offers it, start with paper trading to learn the platform without risking real money. thinkorswim and Webull offer this.
Tax forms. Your broker will ask you to complete a W-9 form (US residents) or W-8BEN (non-US residents) for tax reporting. This determines how your dividends are taxed.
