Index trading with leverage comes in three forms: leveraged ETFs, index CFDs, and index futures. Each has different margin rules, costs, and holding periods. The right one depends on your strategy (directional bet, hedge, or spread), your holding period (intraday, days, weeks), and your jurisdiction (US, EU, UK, etc.).

Leveraged ETFs
A leveraged ETF aims to deliver a multiple of the daily return of an index. A 2× S&P 500 ETF aims to return 2× the daily S&P 500 return. A -2× Nasdaq ETF aims to return -2× the daily Nasdaq return.

- Listed on exchanges. Buy and sell through any standard brokerage account.
- Daily reset. The fund resets to its target leverage every day. Holding for multiple days gives the compounded daily return, not 2× the multi-day return.

- No margin call risk. The risk is the position value, not a margin call.
Best for: short-term directional bets (1-4 weeks) on a specific index. Not appropriate for buy-and-hold because of the daily reset.
Index CFDs
An index CFD (Contract for Difference) is an OTC derivative that tracks the price of an index. You put down a margin (typically 5-20% of the notional) and gain or lose based on the price movement. The broker is the counterparty.
Key characteristics:
- OTC derivative. Traded through the broker, not on an exchange. The broker is the counterparty.
- No expiry. CFDs don't expire. You can hold them indefinitely, but the daily funding cost accumulates.
- Daily funding cost. The broker charges (or pays) the difference between the long and short rates. On a 2× leveraged position, the funding can be 3-10% per year.
- Margin call risk. If the position moves against you, the broker can demand additional margin. If you don't provide it, the broker closes the position.
- Spread and commission. The broker makes money on the spread and sometimes on a per-trade commission.
Best for: short-term directional bets (1-4 weeks) on indices, especially in Europe where leveraged ETF access is limited for retail. The funding cost makes longer holding periods expensive.
Index futures
An index future is a standardized contract traded on a regulated exchange. You put down an initial margin (typically 5-10% of the notional) and the position is marked to market daily. The exchange, not a broker, is the counterparty.
Key characteristics:
- Exchange-listed. Standardized contracts. Traded on CME, Eurex, ICE, etc.
- Defined expiry. Quarterly expiry dates, plus weekly or monthly contracts for some indices. The position rolls at expiry.
- Initial and maintenance margin. The exchange sets the initial margin; the broker may add a buffer. The maintenance margin is 75-80% of the initial margin typically.
- No funding cost. There's no daily funding charge, but the contract has a roll cost when you extend the position.
- Mark to market daily. Profits and losses are credited or debited to the account daily. The margin can go up if the position moves against you.
Best for: longer-term directional bets (weeks to months), hedging, and spread trades. The exchange-cleared structure eliminates the broker counterparty risk of CFDs.

Three scenarios:
- "I want to bet on the S&P 500 going up 5% over 2 weeks." A leveraged ETF is the cleanest tool in the US. In Europe where leveraged ETFs are restricted, a CFD is the alternative.
- "I want to hedge my long stock portfolio for 3 months." An index future is the right tool. The longer holding period makes the daily reset of leveraged ETFs and the funding cost of CFDs expensive. The future is cheaper for medium-term hedges.
- "I want to scalp the DAX intraday." A CFD or a future is the right tool. The leverage is high, the cost is low for short holding periods, and the execution is fast. Pick a broker with tight spreads and fast execution.
How to evaluate
When choosing between the three, ask:
- What's the holding period? (1-4 weeks: ETF or CFD. Weeks to months: future.)
- What's the cost of holding? (Expense ratio for ETF, funding for CFD, roll cost for future.)
- What's the counterparty risk? (Low for ETF and future, broker-dependent for CFD.)
- What's the jurisdiction? (Leveraged ETFs are restricted in the EU for retail. CFDs are banned for retail in some jurisdictions. Futures are generally available everywhere.)
- What's the liquidity? (ETFs and futures are exchange-liquid. CFDs are broker-liquid with wider spreads.)

Common mistakes
Three patterns:
- Buying a leveraged ETF in a tax-advantaged account where the daily reset triggers a tax event. In the US, leveraged ETFs are taxed as ordinary income on the daily resets. In an IRA or 401(k), the tax issue disappears, but the underlying daily reset is still bad for long-term holding.
- Holding a CFD through an earnings cycle without accounting for the funding cost. The funding cost on a 6-month CFD position can be 2-5% of the position value. The trade can be right on direction and still lose money net of funding.
- Forgetting the roll cost on a future. In a contango market, the roll cost eats 1-3% per quarter.
